What is e-mail forwarding and how can I use it?

Email forwarding allows you to simply forward one email address to another.

There are a few common uses for email forwarding below:

  • When you want your domain email forwarded to an existing email account you may have with your ISP. This should typically only be used as a temporary solution; when you’re traveling for example. Even in this case we would recommend that you temporarily check your email via the web interface rather than forward your email.
  • If one person is answering email for several different addresses. For example, joe@yourdomain may answer email for his account, as well as info@yourdomain, sales@yourdomain, and support@yourdomain. However, we recommend in cases like this you use email aliases.
  • Lastly, one of the more common uses for this is when someone is away from the office and you need to temporarily forward their email to another person.

Also, it is important to manage your email box size by deleting any unwanted or forwarded mail. When forwarding email it is easy to forget about the email account and the mail can quickly reach its limit for that email account. See KBA# 69 for email storage limits.
